How To Properly Fit An N95 Mask

When it comes to protecting yourself against airborne particles like germs, mold, viruses, and bacteria, an N95 mask (otherwise known as a particulate respirator) should be your first line of defense. While these masks are simple to use and put in place, you can’t just strap one on without knowing how to properly wear it or fit it correctly. This guide will teach you everything you need to know about how to fit an N95 mask correctly so that you can get the most protection possible from this life-saving tool!

Prepare a mask before wearing it

Before putting on the mask, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Then, hold the mask so that the stiff band is at the top and position the mask under your chin. Next, take the top strap and put it over your head before taking the bottom strap and placing it at the base of your neck. After that, pinch the metal nose clip to fit snugly around your nose. Finally, pull down on the bottom of the mask until it covers your mouth and nose completely.

Put on your mask

Before you put on your mask, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Then, hold the mask by the ear loops and position it over your nose and mouth. Be sure to adjust the nose clip so that it fits snugly over the bridge of your nose. Once the mask is in place, use both hands to mold the stiff edge of the mask around your face. Make sure that you don’t have any gaps between your face and the mask.

Adjust your mask

Before you put on your mask, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Next, hold the mask so that the stiff, bendable edge is pointing upwards and check to make sure the nosepiece is at the top of the mask. Then, put the mask over your nose and mouth, making sure to secure it under your chin. Once it’s in place, use both hands to mould the stiff edge of the mask around your nose. Finally, make sure you can breathe easily by doing a seal check: exhale sharply through your nose while keeping the head strap pulled tight. If you feel any air leaks, adjust your mask and repeat the process until you get a good seal.
