Why You Need A NIOSH N95 Respirator Face Mask

An N95 mask is a respirator and cannot be used as a surgical mask or provide liquid barrier protection. While N95 respirators are the best in their class, you can still get some level of protection and fit from other camouflage methods. You still need to make sure the industrial N95 mask is on the NIOSH approved list and provides a proper face seal. Either way, the N95 and KN95 options are far more effective than the tissue and surgical options, and certainly better than not wearing a mask at all.

In fact, N95 masks filter particles much better than “procedural” masks with earrings or double-knot surgical masks. The N95 mask is actually a disposable medical respirator made from a dense synthetic polymer designed to provide additional protection against contamination. NIOSH N95 surgical masks are in high demand by healthcare professionals, frontline workers, and other workers who require first-class protection against contaminants and bacteria. For non-medical personnel, KN95 respirators are a good choice as they almost all offer the same protection as N95 respirators, but are not suitable for use in medical environments.

The CDC does not recommend the use of N95 respirators with the word “surgery” in the name, as medical professionals must purchase these masks first. For more information on specific NIOSH-approved N95 respirator masks and approved manufacturers and distributors, see the CDC N95 Mask List, which also includes model numbers. When shopping for an N95 mask, you can check the list of CDC-approved N95 respirators to make sure the mask you are looking at has been tested and meets NIOSH guidelines. The “not for medical use” manufacturer’s disclaimer only means that the certification body for all N95 masks is NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) and not CDC (Centers for Disease Control).

CDC recommends that staff caring for patients with suspected or confirmed coronavirus disease use a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-approved N95 filtering face mask (FFR) for health care. Fitted N95 respirators approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) — like those distributed to the public by the Biden administration — provide adults with “the highest level of protection” against Covid-19. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC study builds on the CDC guidelines for face masks released earlier this year that detail the different levels of protection offered by different types of masks – with N95 masks at the top of the list. In its consumer mask guidance, the CDC states that NIOSH-approved N95 respirators and other respirators are the most protective option.

The FDA has since withdrawn the UAE’s certification of non-NIOSH-approved respirators because some KN95 masks may not meet U.S. standards in terms of filtration. According to a report cited in part by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, N95 masks have two main advantages over simple cloth-lined or surgical masks. A disposable N95 mask (respirator) is a protective device that covers the nose and mouth and helps protect the wearer from inhaling certain harmful substances.
